Portrait Masters Awards August 2021

Vancouver Portrait Photographer — Received 21 Awards from The Portrait Masters Competition!

This week the Portrait Masters announced their awards and I was honoured to have received 21 awards this round! The coolest part (to me) is that every single award that was given was of client work, except my self portraits. Why is that so cool? It’s because I took these images without the thought of submitting them to competition. This is my standard of work and it’s incredibly fulfilling to be acknowledged by some of the best photographers in the world that my work is worthy of high professional standard.

What is The Portrait Masters Competition?

The Portrait Masters Competition is put on by Sue Bryce Education and is essentially 2 programs. The first being the awards; photographers from all over the world submit images to different categories: Contemporary, Family & Group, Movement, Maternity, Newborn, Children, Teen & Senior, Pet, Boudoir and each round they have a “challenge” category. This rounds challenge category was “Self Portraits”. Once you submit your images they are reviewed by Sue Bryce and other Master Photographers. Each image will receive a score out of 100, which will determine the award you receive.

  • Bronze — High Professional Standard (70-79) *Images that score between 75-79 are given a Bronze with Distinction (my top 4 images). This means the image scored exceptionally well and was close to a silver.

  • Silver — Outstanding Technique & Visual Communication (80-89)

  • Gold — Exemplary / Superior / Exceptional (90-100)

The second part of the competition is the Accreditation!

Not only can you receive an award for your images, you also get a certain amount of points for each award to work towards becoming an Accredited Photographer. Photographers are working towards their Associate Photographer (25 points), Master Photographer (50 points) and Fellow Photographer (100 points). Upon successfully reaching your required points level for MASTER, your folio will be manually reviewed to ensure your current work is of a consistent, good professional standard which reflects the accolade and title of ‘Master’ within The Portrait Masters. In order to reach FELLOW, you must have at minimum 10 images with silver or gold merits in your folio.

I am proud to announce I am half-way to Associate Photographer and know I can accomplish this goal by next round! I’m so grateful for Sue Bryce and her supportive community of fellow photographers and educators that continue to push me to become a better photographer for myself and for my clients. I will always be learning and improving.
